The Shawnee Police Department and the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office are again partnering up for another Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG).  This is a new 2010 solicitation where money is given to agencies for assistance in fighting crime.    This solicitation is for $27,563 and will be used for purchasing items such as mini cameras, ballistic shields, entry tools, flashlights, and ammunition, to name a few items.  The Shawnee Police Department will use $13,540 of the funding and the Pottawatomie County Sheriff’s Office will use the remaining $14,023.  In the past, both agencies partnered up for other Byrnes Grants. In 2007, $22,583.00 was used for tasers and reimbursement for some overtime pay. Then in 2009 both agencies shared another 25,918 with the local solicitation and another $143,736 in stimulus funding.  Both agencies have benefited greatly with the Edwards Byrne Memorial Funding that was named after a New York City Police Officer who was murdered while on duty in the early 1980s.
